The Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Purulia, was established in the year 1957 with the object of giving a practical and concrete shape to some of the educational ideas of Swami Vivekananda. Education, in order to be effective and fruitful, must be man-making, that is, it must bring about total and integrated development of the personality of the students. This can be achieved only when the students are brought up in surroundings where their body, mind and spirit can be looked after to effloresce in a congenial environment. In this context, Swami Vivekananda prescribed the ancient Gurukula system of education. The Vidyapith has adopted this system, suited and adapted to modern conditions of life.

CIRCULAR : ADMISSION  TO  CLASS  XI , 2014

1. The students passing the Madhyamik Pariksha or Equivalent Examination from Ramakrishna Mission Schools and Other Schools in West Bengal may apply for Admission into Class XI and collect Admission Test Form & other relevant papers within seven days from the date of publication of Madhyamik Pariksha or Equivalent Examination Results.

2. Candidates securing 85% marks in Science subjects and 80% average in Grand Total are eligible to collect Forms from the office during office hours i.e. from 11-00 a.m. to 4-00 p.m. on working days. Price of each Form is Rs. 300/-.

3. The candidates should produce original Admit Card and Marks Sheets at the time of the collection of the Form.

4. The students are required to bring for filling up the form : i) two coloured            Passport-size Photo of the Candidate, ii) Income Certificate of the Guardian, iii) SC/ST/OBC certificate (if applicable), iv) Certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner, v) Attested photocopies of Admit-Card & Marksheet of Madhyamik Pariksha or Equivalent Examination vi) Character Certificate from the Headmaster.

5. The Admission Test will be held on the tenth days after the publication of Madhyamik Pariksha results. The duly filled in Forms must be submitted to the Office with two days in hand.

6. The Admission Test for Science Stream will comprise a combined written test on Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English (MP standard). The Test will be of 3½ hours duration and will carry as Maximum Marks 30 in Physics, 30 in Chemistry, 40 in Mathematics and 20 in English.

7. The result of the Admission Test will be walled-up here on the sixth day after the Admission Test.

8. The Admission will start from the very day on which the result of the Admission Test will be brought out. Selected candidates are to get themselves admitted positively within two days from the publication of Admission Test result.

SYLLABUS FOR ADMISSION TEST OF CLASS – XI

P  H  Y  S  I  C  S

 1. Mechanics and Properties of Matter :

i)        Particle Dynamics :

Rest and motion, reference frame, displacement, speed, velocity and acceleration, kinematical equations, elementary problems, scalars and vectors (elementary ideas). Newton’s laws of motion, units of force, impulse and impulsive forces, conservation of linear momentum.

ii)      Work, Energy and Power :

Definition of work as a scalar product, relevant units, mechanical energy, kinetic and potential energy, conservation of energy – case of a freely falling body, power, units of power.

2. Heat & temperature :

i)        Calorimetry :

Quantity of heat, thermal units, specific heat, thermal capacity and water equivalent, fundamental principle of calorimetry, calorimetric problems.

ii)      Change of state :

Melting point, boiling point, effect of pressure on melting point and boiling point, difference between gas and vapour, critical temperature, latent heat.

3. Optics :

i)        Reflection at plane surface.

ii)      Refraction :

Laws of refraction, refractive index absolute and relative, different cases of refraction, real depth and apparent depth, total internal reflection, critical angle, relation between refractive index and critical angle.

4. Current electricity :

Flow of electric charges in a metallic conductor, Ohm’s law, volt, ampere and Ohm resistance and resistively, factors on which resistance of a conductor depends, combination of resistances in series and parallel, equivalent resistance, shunt, internal resistance of a cell.

C  H  E  M  I  S  T  R  Y

Unit : 1

Atomic Structure :

Concept of Nuclear Atom : electron, proton and neutron (change and mass), atomic number, Extra nuclear structure, Rutherford’s model and its limitations. Bohr’s model of hydrogen atom and its limitations. The four quantum numbers : n, l, m and s, the s, p, d and f electrons, ground state electronic configurations of many atoms and mono atomic ions.

Unit : 2

Dalton’s atomic theory (critical study), Avogadro’s hypothesis, Applications of Avogadro’s hypothesis, Avogadro’s Number. Atomic mass, Molecular mass, Equivalent weight (no experimental determination required), A = E x V, Gay Lussac’s law of gaseous volume, Mole concept. Weight – weight, Weight – volume calculations, Eudiometry. Equivalent weight of radical, acid, base, salt, oxidant and reductant.

Unit : 3

Periodic Table :

Modern periodic law. Classification of elements on electronic configuration. Types of elements : representative elements (s – block and p – block), transitional (d – block) elements, inner transional           (f –block) elements. Periodic trends in physical and chemical properties : atomic radii, valency, ionisation potential, electron affinity, metallic nature, acidic and basic natures of oxides and hydrides of elements upto Z = 20, position of hydrogen and noble gases, diagonal relationships.

Unit : 4

Gas Laws :

Boyle’s law, Charles’ law, absolute scale of temperature, kinetic theory of gases (postulates only), ideal gas equation : PV = n RT,  Dalton’s law of partial pressure, Grahm’s law of gaseous diffusion. (Numerical problems)

Unit : 5

Elementary idea about oxidation, reduction, acids and bases.

Unit : 6

Organic Chemistry ; Elementary idea about alkanes, alkenes and alkynes.

M  A  T  H  E  M  A  T  I  C  S

 1. ALGEBRA

i) Factors : Middle terms, cyclic, vanishing or zero factor, Hader factors. ii) Solve : Simultaneous, Quadratic and their problems. Iii) Ratio and Proportions. iv) Variation v) Surds vi) Laws of Indices vii) Logarithm viii) Theory of Quadratic Equation and Expressions ix) Arithmetic and Geometric Progression.

  1. TRIGONOMETRY

i) Idea of Trigonometry from class X syllabus (of WBBSE) ii) Trigonometrical Ratios of positive acute angles and standard angles. iii) Trigonometrical Ratios of any angles and associated angles.

  1. COORDINATE GEOMETRY

Basic Ideas : Distance formula, section formula, area of triangles, Condition of collinearity of three points in a plane.

  1. Concept of plane Geometry from Class IX & X (syllabus of WBBSE)
  2. Real Number, Function, Limits.
